So…you’ve encountered your first skin tag. It might be on you…or it may be on your loved one. You’re probably wondering what is this shriveled balloon looking object that somehow is attached to me. What are skin tag causes?

 

 

How could this have happened?

 

 

First off…remain calm. Skin tags are actually pretty normal. Congratulations, you’re normal! All jokes aside, skin tags are harmless and nothing to be worried about. Almost everyone in their lives with have a skin tag at one point. Both men and women are prone to getting skin tags. They usually do not cause pain unless pulled on. Actually, Skin tags are harmless!

Its true, Skin tags are not dangerous and do not pose a medical threat. They are more annoying than anything. Skin tags will not cause you any pain. They are more of a cosmetic burden. The only time a skin tag might cause you any discomfort is if a piece of jewelry or clothing pulls on a skin tag.

Also called acrochordons in the medical world and others refer to them as “skin tabs”.

A doctor may use the following terms to describe a skin tag like

  • fibroepithelial polyp

  • cutaneous papilloma

  • and soft fibroma.

 

 

A skin tag or acrochordons is a small flap of skin colored tissue that hangs off the body by another piece of tissue or a “stalk.” A skin tag is usually a soft skin growth. Skin tags can be on anyone and be on various parts of the body.  

Skin tags are usually found on places like the…

  • Neck
  • Underarm
  • Under the breasts
  • Back
  • Groin area
  • Around the Eyes and Face

 

 

 

 

 

 

The two places skin tags love the most are the neck and the armpits.

 

It is important to remember that skin tags are noncancerous growths and it is possible to live with them without removal or any treatment. Skin tags are benign tumors and will not become cancerous if left untreated.  

 

What are skin tag causes?

No one can be quite sure.  The exact cause is unknown to this day. Also, have been said to be linked to obesity. Skin tags do seem to affect those who are middle aged but children and babies do get skin tags, on the eyelid and around the neck folds. Often are found on pregnant women as well. Due to the changing of hormone elevations from pregnancy, it may be a cause as to why many pregnant women have skin tags.  

Are skin tags contagious?

Skin tags are not contagious so you don’t have to worry about “catching” skin tags from anyone. If you are uncertain of a new or changing skin tag, mole, or freckle, see a doctor or dermatologist.
