13 Home Remedies for Skin Tags That Will Surprise You!

Skin tags are soft growths that usually form within the skin folds of the neck, under arm, eyelids, face, groin, and breast folds. Any of these skin flaps can be susceptible to these annoying, embarrassing skin growths. It is still unclear even in 2018 what causes skin tags or skin tabs as some call them. Skin tags may be developed from friction – skin rubbing against skin or clothing. It is also said that there may be a correlation between skin tags and obesity. Also, hormonal changes in pregnancy may also be a reason why there are now skin tags popping up.

Skin tags are benign skin growths and are usually harmless. However…if a piece of jewelry or clothing or anything at all gets snagged on these skin lesions, they can be quite painful! Ouch! Not to mention embarrassing if you have to explain to someone what exactly is on your face, neck, or other body part. AWKWARD! And then you begin to wonder if people aren’t looking at you…they are looking at your skin tag!

Don’t freak out, you have options to remove your skin tag! Skip the dermatologist’s office – there are a number of ways you can remove your skin tag, with items found around your own kitchen and medicine cabinet.  Warning! Not all home remedies for skin tags are pain free and most require lots of patience to allow for the skin tag to dry out and eventually fall off.

Let’s take a look at some skin tag removal treatments that you can try:

1. Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree Oil is great for so many things due its anti-viral and anti-fungal properties. YAY Nature! Start with washing the affected area, once dry, use a cotton ball to apply the tea tree oil direct to the affected area. Be liberal with your application! Make sure the entire skin tag is covered. Place bandage over the area of skin. Do this 2-3x per day. This will take a few weeks, depending on the size of the skin tag you are dealing with.  Click here for more information on tea tree oil.

2. String/Floss

Ouch! This. is. going. to. hurt. I warned you! Not Recommended.

First cut a piece of string, thread, or dental floss…make sure the thread or floss is long enough to maneuver with. Then use isopropyl alcohol to sterilize the area, with a cotton ball or sterile gauze pad. Wipe the area around the skin tag, and also the thread or floss you are using.

Loop the thread around the skin tag, make sure the thread is as close to the base of the skin tag as possible.Tie the thread into a tight knot and then tie another knot so it will not come loose.

Trim the ends of the thread or floss with scissors wiped with alcohol so the ends do not catch on anything. Next is the waiting game. Depending on how tight your knots were, this could take some days or weeks. Since you are literally cutting the blood supply off to the skin tag, you are waiting for it to wither and die. This could take a while, and depending on where your skin tag is located…could be very awkward.

3. Banana Peel

Save those Peels! Banana Peel is a great natural way to remove those pesky skin tags. With just a piece of the peel itself, place it directly over the tag. Cover and secure with a bandage. Continue this process nightly until skin tag falls off.

4. Garlic

Not just for warding off vampires anymore…garlic is here to ward off skin tags! Garlic is made of anti-aging properties that help reduce inflammation. There are so many health benefits to garlic it is ridiculous. For a natural home remedy, try using crushed garlic over the tag. Cover and secure with a bandage overnight. Wash in the morning and repeat nightly until you see results.

5. Apple Cider Vinegar

Cotton Ball Time Again! Use a cotton ball and soak it in apple cider vinegar. Place directly on skin tag and wrap it up for about 15 – 30 minutes. Wash skin after. Repeat this daily. Due to the acidity of the apple cider vinegar, it breaks down the skin tissues of the skin tag. In time the mole, wart,  or skin tag will fall off.

6. Vitamin E Oil

A great topical aid – find good quality Vitamin E Oil to use. Apply d

irectly to skin tag. Try using a little bit of plastic wrap to cover the skin tag in, secure with bandage. Do this nightly, in a few weeks you will see some difference in the skin tag. By cutting off the air supply with the plastic wrap, you should see the skin tag reduce in size a bit faster.

Lemon juice in particular! Did you know…Lemon juice is a powerful antiseptic. It also has something inside it called citric acid, this will help to dry out skin tags.  Take a lemon, cut it in half, apply the juice to a cotton ball. Apply this directly to the skin tag and leave it on without washing it off. Do this 3x a day.

10. Liquid Iodine

Liquid iodine can be applied on to skin tags or warts once daily. By doing this daily, there are accounts of the skin tag falling off within a week. Be careful with this form of removal treatment, iodine should be applied directly onto the skin tag or wart. Iodine is a natural tool that breaks down skin cells and causes them to break down and fall off. It is important to protect the surrounding skin when applying iodine. Best Practice: Rub coconut oil onto the skin surrounding the skin tag…protect the healthy skin with the coconut oil. Apple iodine with a q-tip for easy application and control.

11. Coconut Oil

The health benefits of coconut oil are out of this world. This might be nature’s best kept secret right here…Coconut oil is an antimicrobial, killing fungi, viruses, and bacteria. Coconut oil is both a skin tag and also a wart removal treatment.  At night, apply coconut oil to skin before bed. Do this every night and within a few short weeks, the skin tag should be reduced and soon fall off. Best Practice: Do this nightly after you shower allowing your skin to fully take in the coconut oil.

12. Tape

Not Recommended. Even if it is cute printed or colored duct tape or strong tape like Gorilla tape…not recommended. Apply a piece of tape to the skin tag – the piece should be large enough to completely cover the skin tag. For the next 2 weeks, or 10-12 days you have to continuously wear this piece of duct tape on your skin. You cannot remove it. You are essentially trying to dry up the skin tag by cutting off its oxygen. This most likely will cause scarring and be painful especially when you rip the tape off. Again…not recommended.

13. Scissors

Not Recommended. Skin tags unfortunately are apart of us…so when you try to cut them off your body…you will feel it! Using scissors or any other type of sharp object will only cause you scarring and physical pain. So if that moment ever arrives in the desperation of skin tag removal and you want to reach for the scissors…just say No. You’ll thank yourself later.

Some of these removal treatments may or may not work for you depending on the location of the skin tag, wart, or mole you are dealing with. When it comes to anything near the eye, it is best to consult a doctor. Also, if you are not 100% certain that what you have is a skin tag, it is best to consult a doctor.
